THE FAIRMONT SCHOOL BOARD HELD THE FIRST OF FOUR PUBLIC MEETINGS ON THE PROPOSED OPERATING LEVY LEVY (OR LEARNING LEVY ) REFERENDUM VOTE THAT WILL TAKE PLACE NOV. 6 THIS YEAR. THOSE IN ATTENDANCE LEARNED THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL BE ASKING TO INCREASE THE LEARNING LEVY FROM THE PRESENT 500 DOLLARS PER PUPIL WHICH IS SCHEDULED TO EXPIRE IN 2014 TO 950 DOLLARS FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS. THE RESULTING 450 DOLLAR INCREASE WIL ALLOW THE DISTRICT TO MAINTAIN ONLY CURRENT ACADEMIC AND CO-CURRICUILAR PROGRAMS AND WOULD NOT PROVIDE FUNDING FOR NEW PROGRAMMING. THIS WOULD BE THE FIRST INCREASE IN THE LERNING LEVY IN NINE YEARS. ACCORDING TO INFORMATION FROM THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION THE PROPOSED INCREASE TO 950 DOLLARS PER PUPIL UNIT WOULD STILL BE THE LOWEST OPERATING LEVY FOR SCHOOLS IN MARTIN COUNTY. CURRENT LEVIES ARE AT 2558 DOLLAR IN TH G H E C DISTRICT, 1540 DOLLARS AT M C W AND 1476 DOLLARS PER PUPIL AT TRUMAN. THE STATE AVERAGE LEARNING LEVY FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN MINNESOTA IS 942 DOLLAR PER STUDENT. ON AVERAGE THE ANNUAL TAX INCREASE FOR FAIRMONT AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT HOUSEHOLDS WOULD BE LESS THAN 33 CENTS PER DAY ACCORDING TO INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE COUNTY.

WITHOUT THE APROVAL OF THE LEARNING LEVY, FUNDING WILL DROP FROM 500 DOLLARS PER STUDENT TO 0 IN 2014, WHICH REPRSENTS MORE THAN A 1 MILLION DOLLAR DECLINE IN ANNUAL REVENUE. THE TOTAL LOSS OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES DUE TO THE PROPOSED REDUCTIONS BY THE SCHOOL BOARD WILL BE 754,000 DOLLARS IF THE LEVY DOES NOT PASS.

THREE MORE PUBLIC HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED REGARDING QUESTIONS ON THE LEVY. THEY ARE THIS SATURDAY OCT. 20 FROM 9 - 10 AM AND MONDAY OCT. 24 FROM 10-11 AM AT THE WILLIAM BUDD MEETING ROOM AT THE FAIRMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THE THIRD WILL BE AT THE CEYLON CITY HALL NEXT THURSDAY OCT. 25TH FROM 6 -7 PM.A
