THE FAIRMONT AREA SCHOOLS AND FAIRMONT POLICE DEPARTMENT "TWEAKING" PROCEDURES AS FAR AS SCHOOL SAFETY ARE CONCERNED FOLLOWING THE EVENTS IN CONNECTICUT LAST WEEK. FAIRMONT POLICE CHIEF GREG BROLMA WITH FAIRMONT AREA SCHOOL SUPT. JOE BROWN MET TUESDAY TO TALK ABOUT A FEW THINGS..

CHIEF BROLSMA SAID THE FAIRMONT AREA SCHOOLS HAS SEVERAL PLANS IN PLACE TO DEAL WITH INCIDENTS.

SAFETY PROCEDURRES INPLACE INCLUDE HAVING JUST ONE MAIN DOOR UNLOCKED FROM THE OUTSIDE,VISITORS HAVING TO CHECK IN AT THE MAIN OFFICE, VISITOR BADGES. REGULAR LOCK DOWN DRILLS,SECURE OFFSITE LOCATIONS TO MOVE CHILDREN IF NEED BE AND AN ARMED SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER IN THE FAIRMONT-JUNIOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT JOE BROWN EXPERIENCED A SCHOOL SHOOTING INCIDENT IN THE LESUER-HENDERSON SCHOOL DISTRICT WHEN HE WAS PRINCIPAL THERE IN 1997 WHEN A POLICE OFFICER WAS WOUNDED.HE SAID THAT SCHOOL OFFICIALS WERE ALERTED A DAY BEFORE BY A COUPLE OF STUDENTS NOTIFIED AUTHORITIES AND WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED THE SCHOOL LOCKED DOWN AND THE SHOOTER HAD NO WHERE TO GO EXCEPT THE RESTROOM

SUPT. BROWN SAID THAT THE POINT OF THAT STORY WAS THAT THE COMMUNITY NEEDS TO BE WARY AND REPORT ANYTHING LIKE THAT THAT COULD LEAD TO SOMETHING SERIOUS HAPPENING.

HE ADDED THAT THE JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH N SCHOOL NOW HAD 96 SECURITY CAMERAS AND THE FAIRMONT ELEMENTARY WITH 72.

CHIEF BROLSMA PLANS MEETINGS WITH ST. JOHN VIANNEY AND ST. PAULS' LUTHERAN SCHOOLS AS WELL. HE SAYS THAT WORKPLACE VIOLENCE IS A CONCERN AS WELL AND SAYS AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON THAT IS PLANNED FOR MARCH 8.
