THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD TUESDAY APPROVED THE USE OF REMAINING BONDING DOLLARS ON THE UPCOMING SURFACING PROJECT OF COUNTY ROAD 38 BETWEEN COUNTY 39 AND COUNTY ROAD 27. THE PROJECT IS A SIX MILE STRETCH THAT WILL HAVE 2-12 FOOT BITUMINOUS LANES AND A FOUR OR 6 FOOT BITUMINOUS SHOULDER, PAVEMENT SAFETY EDGE AND RUMBLE STRIPES. THE PROJECT WILL BE PAID FOR MOSTLY WITH COUNTY STATE AID CONSTRUCTION FUNDS FOR UP TO 3.5 MILLION AND A STATE SAFETY GRANT OF 226,070 DOLLARS. THE BONDING MONEY WILL BE NEED TO COVER THE ADDITIONAL COST OF THE 4 OR 6 FOOT BITUMINOUS SHOULDER THAT COMMISSIONERS APPROVED OVER TWO OTHER LESS COSTLY OPTIONS THAT HIGHWAY ENGINEER KEVIN PEYMANN PRESENTED TO THE BOARD. THE BOARD WANTED FURTHER STUDY ON THE COST DIFFERENTIAL FOR THE EXTRA TWO FEET OF BITUMINOUS SHOULDER BEFORE MAKING A FINAL DECISION. THEY CHOSE TO USE BONDING DOLLARS RATHER THAN USE RESERVE GENERAL FUND MONEY FOR THE EXTRA COST.
