Martin County West will be leaving the Gopher Valley Conference in football for the Southern Minnesota Football Conference after the 2012 season. The SMC approved the addition of MCW and Minnesota Valley Lutheran last week as the conference expands from eight to 10 member schools. In 2012, the SMC will have eight teams after Southwestern United and Mountain Lake have left for the nine-man Southern Confederacy. Schools in the Southern Minnesota Conference for the 2013 season will be Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Cedar Mountain/Comfrey, Martin County West, Minnesota Valley Lutheran, New Ulm Cathedral, Red Rock Central, Sleepy Eye, Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s, Springfield and Wabasso. In the 10-team SMC, all teams play eight conference games. There is one conference opponent each team will not play each year.
